Pro-Grade Renovation.

Chuck Noll Field at St. Vincent College is the summer home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, hosting one of the NFL’s most demanding training camps. The natural-grass surface endures constant drills, high-intensity reps, cleat traffic, and rapid turnaround expectations — all while supporting a tight practice schedule and heavy media presence. To prepare the field for another season of pro-level training, the Steelers enlisted Hummer to execute a full renovation in 2023.

Hummer began by stripping and removing the existing natural-grass surface, clearing the way for a precise regrade. Using laser-guided equipment, the team reshaped the field base to ensure proper slope, uniformity, and playability — foundational elements for a safe, consistent NFL practice environment — and installed a new sand grid drainage system and irrigation infrastructure as part of the reconstruction. Once the grade was perfected, Hummer installed a new high-performance, heavy-use sod surface engineered to withstand the rigorous demands of daily training sessions.

On top of the technical execution, Hummer coordinated closely with facility management, aligning all phases of the renovation with practice schedules, campus operations, and training camp deadlines. The project delivered a fresh, durable, and NFL-ready natural-grass surface that met the Steelers’ expectations for performance, safety, and reliability.
