Medlar Field, the home of Penn State Baseball, required a complete surface renovation to meet Division-I performance standards and support the program’s demanding schedule. In 2023, the university launched a comprehensive upgrade to modernize the natural-grass playing surface, optimize irrigation, and improve the overall durability and consistency of the field. With high expectations for playability, aesthetics, and precision, Penn State relied on Hummer Turfgrass Systems to deliver a professional-grade rebuild.
Hummer began by installing a brand-new irrigation system designed to deliver uniform coverage and efficient water management across the infield and outfield. The team then performed laser-controlled grading to establish smooth transitions between the natural-grass areas, warning track, and sand-based root zone—a critical requirement for both ball response and athlete safety. Once grading was complete, Hummer incorporated nutrients into the root-zone mix and applied the specified infield conditioner to enhance footing, drainage, and overall turf performance.
With the foundation perfected, Hummer installed premium natural-grass sod across the field, rolling and finishing it to create a seamless, professional-caliber surface. All phases of the work were coordinated around Penn State’s tight project schedule and competitive demands, resulting in a high-performance field engineered for Division-I baseball. The finished surface provides improved durability, smoothness, and consistency—ready for every pitch, slide, and play of the season.
