The Maryland SoccerPlex is one of the most heavily used soccer facilities in the Mid-Atlantic, hosting year-round tournaments, league play, training academies, and community events. With fields that rarely get rest and a schedule that leaves no room for downtime, the facility needed natural-grass surfaces capable of withstanding exceptional wear while recovering quickly after rain, tournaments, and peak-usage periods. From 2017 to 2024, Hummer Turfgrass Systems partnered with the SoccerPlex to execute a comprehensive, phased improvement plan across multiple fields.
Hummer began by resurfacing targeted natural-grass fields — removing worn turf, correcting surface inconsistencies, and installing new high-performance sod. Precision laser grading restored proper planarity and created uniform playing surfaces across all dimensions of each field. The team then upgraded irrigation systems to improve water efficiency and ensure consistent turf health, a critical factor for heavily trafficked soccer environments. One of the most impactful improvements was the installation of a Sand Grid Drainage System on all 24 fields, dramatically increasing drainage efficiency and reducing weather-related game cancellations.
Alongside the renovation work, Hummer provided ongoing seasonal turf-health programs — including aeration, fertilization, overseeding, and topdressing — along with rapid in-season repairs to support tournaments and league play. A carefully coordinated, multi-year schedule allowed the SoccerPlex to maintain field availability even during peak usage, transforming the complex into a more resilient, consistent, and tournament-ready natural-grass environment.
